Cameron, Antonia.  (2004). Fostering Children’s Mathematical Development: The Landscape of Learning.  Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann Publishing.  One 61 page book, plus CD/ROM and users manual.  An innovative project where teachers help young children construct a deep understanding of number and operations in a math workshop environment.  Appropriate for inservice use.  (RESA Circulating Collection: QA135.5.C36).

 

Cuisenaire Co. (2002).  Mathematics: Teaching for Understanding.  White Plains, NY: Cuisenaire Co.  Covers how to implement the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards for teaching students to value math, solve problems, use manipulatives and reason, while increasing confidence in their math ability.  Three 60 minute videocassettes plus one teacher discussion guide.  (RESA Circulating Collection: QA13.M32).

 

Exemplars. (2002). Best of Math Exemplars.  Underhill, VT: Exemplars.  One computer disc.  Contains over 100 K-8 assessment and instruction tasks.  Includes scoring rubrics and student benchmark papers; search capability by NCTM Standards, content area, the flexibility to create or edit tasks.  Appropriate for inservice use.  (RESA Circulating Collection: QA115.B277).

 

Gammill, Amy.  (2004). Web Resources for Math Activities.  Westminister, CA: Teacher Created Resources.  One 92 page book, appropriate for inservice use.  Presents online computer resources for student use.  (RESA Circulating Collection: Q131.G26).

 

TeachStream. (2003). Strategies That Work for Mathematics Teachers.  Sandy, Utah: LPD Video Journal of Education.  One 45 minute videocassette and implementation guide.  Assists math teachers in implementing high-quality programs that combine a balance of pedagogy and content.  Appropriate for inservice use.  (RESA Circulating Collection: QA11.S87).

 

Web Resources:

A Maths Dictionary for Kids

(Online).  Available:  http://www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/  (16 March 2005).  This site provides an animated, interactive dictionary for students that explains over 500 mathematical terms.

 

A+ Math:

(Online).  Available:  http://www.aplusmath.com/  (16 March 2005).  This interactive site was developed to help students improve their math skills, and contains games, flashcards, homework helpers, and worksheets.  Appropriate for elementary students.

 

Count Us In

(Online).  Available:  http://www.abc.net.au/countusin/default.htm  (16 March 2005).  This site is appropriate for elementary students and includes games to help children better understand basic number concepts. 

 

Eisenhower National Clearinghouse

(Online).  Available:  http://www.enc.org/  (16 March 2005).  The funding for this site will end in September 2005, but until then, resources are available for free.  Resources include curriculum and professional development resources for K-12 math and science teachers.

 

Fun Mathematics Lessons by Cynthia Lanius
(Online).  Available: http://math.rice.edu/~lanius/Lessons/  (16 March 2005).  This site has lessons for K-12 math students.  Click on the author’s name in the upper right corner for access to additional quality online information.

 

Mathematics Lesson Plans

(Online).  Available:  http://www.col-ed.org/cur/math.html  (16 March 2005).  Find lesson plans for K – 12 students created by teachers for use in their classrooms.  This site is maintained by Columbia Education Center.

 

Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics
(Online).  Available:  http://www.mictm.org/  (16 March 2005).  This is the web site for the professional organization specifically for Michigan math teachers.  Especially useful are the resources listed under the “Links.”

 

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

(Online).  Available:  http://www.nctm.org/  (16 March 2005).  This is the site of the national professional association for math teachers.  Includes links to conferences, publications, standards, and more.

 

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives for Interactive Mathematics

(Online).  Available:  http://matti.usu.edu/nlvm/nav/index.html  (16 March 2005).  This site is created and maintained by Utah State University.  Click on the link for the “Virtual Library” to find activities organized by topic and grade level.

 

NCTM Illuminations

(Online).  Available:  http://illuminations.nctm.org/  (March 16, 2005).  This site links lesson plans to NCTM standards, and includes additional tools and web resources.

 

Problems with a Point

(Online).  Available:  http://www2.edc.org/mathproblems/default.asp  (16 March 2005).  Problem solving lesson plans for students in grades 6 – 12.

 

Shodor Education Foundation, Inc.

(Online).  Available:  http://www.shodor.org/  (16 March 2005).  This site provides access to curriculum materials, faculty development, and student enrichment.

 

The Math Forum

(Online).  Available:  http://mathforum.org/  (16 March 2005).  Features include Ask Dr. Math, Problem of the Week, Math Resources by Subject, and more.  Especially useful is the math library link.
